『The Nature of Order』を読む（Book 1:最初～第1章）

さらに、次の箇所も重要である。

"My aim in this book is to create a scientific view of the world in which this concept --- the idea that everything has its degree of life --- is well-defined." (Preface, p.32)

すべてのものに「degree of life」がある、という。このことは、『The Nature of Order』の根本的で重要な考え方である。

ここでいう、「life」というのは、生物的な意味での「life」ではなく、より広い意味での概念である。

"The quality I call life in these buildings exists as a quality. It is clearly not the same as the biological life we recognize in organisms. It is a larger idea, and a more general one." (Chapter 1: The Phenomenon of Life, p.45)

ここで重要なのは、アレグザンダーが「life」と呼ぶのは「quality」である、ということ。
つまり、「いきいきとした質」を「life」という言葉で言及しているのである。
だから、無生物の「波」や「炎」にも、「life」があるということは可能となる。

"It is this very general life --- formal, geometric, structural, social, biological, and holistic --- which is my main target." (Chapter 1, p.46)

このように、「Life」という言葉は、生物的な意味に限定するのではなく、より一般的な意味で用いられているのである。

また、「Life」と「Wholeness」の関係については、次のような記述もある。

"To produce this life, we must first see how life springs from wholeness, and indeed how life is wholeness. Wholeness exists all around us, and life springs from it." (Chapter 1, p.55)

そのような「life」があるものを生み出すためには、いかにして「life」が「wholeness」（全体性）から生じるのか、また、どのように「life」が「wholeness」なのかを理解することが必要だという。
