Research topics at KEIO SFC f-lab

  • This page introduces research themes which are conducted by Keio University SFC Furutani laboratory (f-lab).
  • Major research topics of f-lab is applied data sciences. Especially, Bayesian statistics, spatio-temporal statistics and their applications to homeland security (safety, environment, transportation and mobility), epidemiology, healthcare, medical science and sports intelligence.

Surveillance with unmanned air vehicle (UAV)

  • UAV is said to become one of the crucial industry in 21st century as well as data science or digital fabrication. World market scale is estimated to be US$ billion to US$ 116 billion in the next decade.
  • UAVs are called as drone or UAS according to their size or payloads.
  • US will lift the ban of commercial use of small UAV. Not only in the US but also in Germany, UK, Australia and Canada, commercial and non-millitary usage of UAVs become active. Following movies shows examples of delivery service, SLAM and nano-drones.
  • On the other hand, it is pointed out that ensuring safety and privacy are problems to be solved.
  • In Japan, commercial use and researches are promoted. UAV is useful to make digital surface model (DSM) data by using image analysis. Accuracy of positioning is expected to be improved by using GNSS or quasi-zenith satellite. Domestic market of UAV in Japan is considered to be small but surveillance technology on such as road infrastructure management is expected to grow more and more.

Data science of traffic safety with probe data

  • Probe car data makes it possible to visualize vehicles's location as well as travel history. By using "big" probe data with speed and acceleration of vehicles, harsh braking spots could be figured out. Several car makers and local administrations start to apply probe data for local traffic safety management, safety information supply for car navigation system and Pay How You Drive.
  • In f-lab, probe car data (more than one million records) supplied by car navigation company is applied to spatio-temporal analysis on potential hazard points.

Sport intelligence and data science with tracking data

  • Recent professional/amature sports such as baseball, sucer, ragby, fottball vollayball and teniss employ trajectory data of players and balls to analyze these tracking data to win games.
  • In f-lab, spatio-temporal statistics is applied to analyze not only players's performance but also team performance (ex. combination of players during games). These data set are obtained by motion capture data and GPS tracking data.

Surveillance and spatio-temporal analysis of epidemiology

  • Since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster after East Japan Great Earthquake, f-lab have been conducting data analysis regarding whole body counter inspection, thyroid inspection, glass badge survey and ambulance data after 3.11 2011, by collaborating with IMSUT (the University of Tokyo, Minamisoma City General Hospital and Hirata clinic.
