"The pond under stars;
A bag of M&Ms floats
With a dead goldfish.
Evening thunderstorm;
A house on a hill
Where are the keys?
I wake up!
A dog is barking
In the morning fog.
Shoes on a street wire;
A bus roared while a boy
Blew bubbles with his saliva.
Ice cubes are melting;
When the day closes
Will there be survivors?
In a plane ride
Tiny butts face the Earth
And move quickly as if embarrassed.
A picture on a wall:
Trees and a boy walking;
A bird screeches outside.
In bed on a summer day,
Rolling around naked,
My grandmother just died.

"Solo renga on a frequent appearance
She curls up
behind his back
sees his icy feet and shudders
a monk returning from his disembowelling studies
slips his stick
at the bridge a woman stops and yells
behind the cry
a face tries to penetrate the haze
the ice cracks at the ridges
and then the mist begins to gather
she slowly wipes her face
the inn at the beginning of the road
narrows its light into a window
the servants snore
one scratches her inner thigh
disturbed fleas fond of her oozing
circumnavigate an empty moon
dreams linger on, she smacks
a delivery boy from a nearby village
sees the crack of dawn and wonders
similarities are inapt
to represent the real thing
the real thing is wonder
oh sure I can perform
although my poor hands wander from glass to glasses
and thinking about the past
my legs go weak and they meander
like the brook outside; I'm feeling hot in here
the hare with few points indistinct
jumps and leaps and jumps
to no avail the grass is thin
should I then ponder
over a distant wail?
the noises from the kitchen
indicate some early tea
the smell is likewise green
escaping from the bamboo's' veil
the reddish sun again
the apparition of a flag
red traffic lights are everywhere
and when she suddenly bares
her eyes in the window light
"Why not now, why wait?"
she tilted beyond tears
finds one hard lens the other cracked
under the snowman's empty feet
no images crystallise the present
floppy geese just waiting to be filled
this winter has no useful presence
ice surrounds an early litter
what essence what to declare?
snowdrift in empty mirrors
is all that matters
we try to remember the words
in every shade of incantation
till breath stops the icing on the lips
and since we cannot hear with muffled ears
we do not feel the warmth of inner feelings
this darkening year
glows shorter
in the candles we lit
we pray to wavering shadows
with no substance
no ashes, nothing is disturbed
the sea in its ground swell slumbers
near the shore an old man
criticises an empty bottle
with nervous eyes glazed at the bottom
the edge is wet from early rain
which leaves no imprint
and having weeded only a quarter
up to the marker of her grave
he does not know the purpose
of his endeavour nor does he care
graves share all currencies
of life but death is another matter
days long remembered crumble
though they keep begging in his mind
"Why not now, why wait?"
the traffic moves along
grinding petals
into a pink entrance upon traffic lights
with no boundaries but trees
along the path things present
and things past merge with moving shadows
fog drowns the voices
of the neighbourhood
into a squabble hardly overheard
by the dead reciting
the order amongst the next of kin
