『The Nature of Order』を読む（Book 1:最初〜第1章）

今週から「シミュレーションデザイン」の授業で、『The Phenomenon of Life: The Nature of Order, Book 1: An Essay of the Art of Building and the Nature of the Universeimage[]』 (Christopher Alexander, The Center for Environmental Structure, 2002) の読解が始まった。

今日は、Book 1 の Prologue、Preface、Chapter 1。

せっかくなので、このブログにも僕が注目した箇所のメモを掲載しておきたい。
下記は内容の要約ではなく、あくまでも注目した箇所のメモ。

まず最初に取り上げたいのは、Prologueにあるアレグザンダーの自分の立ち位置についての記述。

"I did not start out as a philosopher, and I have no special desire to write about philosophy or about the nature of things. This is not my trade. I am interested in one question above all --- how to make beautiful buildings. But I am interested only in it real beauty." (Prologue, p.2)

アレグザンダーはここで、哲学としてではなく、どうやってつくるのか、ということにつなげて探究しているという姿勢を明言している。

次に、なぜこの本のタイトルが『The Nature of Order』であるかという理由について。

"Our idea of matter is essentially governed by our idea of order. What matter is, is governed by our idea of how space can be arranged; and that in turn is governed by our idea of how orderly arrangement in space creates matter. So it is the nature of order which lies at the root of the problem of architecture. Hence the title of this book." (Preface, p.8)
