@@There is a network of educational institutions for senior students as the last stage of life long education in Australia. It is also in the UK and is called U3A, abbreviated of University of the Third Age.@This education network was originated in Tours, France in 1972 to enable senior people to live better by participating in education programs given in universities. It is a community group of study programs organized for active seniors. It is run by as a self governing body by consensus of all the participants.
@
@They enjoy study and help one another, so every participant
contributes in some way I visited the U3A campus on the Gold Coast, Australia. It collaborates with a famous national university called Griffith University and U3A students are invited to participate in classes as auditor students.

@Therefore, the universities encourage adult
and senior education and they open their facilities and classes to the public. It was one of the first classeopen daysf when I visited I noticed some wheel-chaired students among other students in the class of U3A facilities of the university are accessible by all handicapped people on the campus, and parking is also easy for them.

@The subjects offered are of an extensive variety. For example, the
contents of subjects are so extensively covered from Mathematics, Zigsaw Puzzle, for reasoning abilities and Appreciation of Music or Arts, then Philosophy, Cultural Anthropology, Psychology, History of Human Ideas, Comparative Studies of Museums to International Affairs. There are also nonacademic subjects related to hobbies, handicrafts,other technical training and even travel planning.

@Mr. Tetsuo Kawamura (71 years old) is one such student learning French language in one of the U3A campuses in a nearby state school. It is 5 minutesf drive from his flat. He moved to the Gold Coast about one and half years ago from Japan under the resident visa for retirees. Aileen (Mrs. Dunkley) is another student of French language but at the same time she is a computer teacher on this same campus. There are other subjects for study on computers and other foreign languages such as Japanese. The elected representatives of the students plan the study programs for each term and then select their teachers. This is a remarkably self supportive activity.Teachers are mostly volunteers and not paid

@As in the case of Aileen, this is not an isolated case that a student in one class, is a teacher in another class. Therefore it is possible to run this educational activity and we can keep the tuition very low for each student. This is really a wonderful system where there is abundance in the spirit of self support and mutual assistance.

@The visit of each organization was carried very smoothly by Mr. Kawamura's cooperation. He is understanding the meaning of my research. Futhermore, he translated the page of Australia as a volunteer. I appreciate very much. (Kumiko Suganuma)
