エジンバラから湖水地方を抜けて、南、イングランドへ。手つかずの自然が広々とした牧草地に変わり、マンチェスターに着く手前から突如として都市空間が目の前に広がりました。
もう少しばかり南に下り、ノッティンガム大学アジア太平洋研究所で"Who is at the helm of Japan, politicians or bureaucrats?"と題してお話しさせていただきました。国際政治系の方が多く、歴史学・地域研究の方を前にお話ししたエジンバラとはまた違う刺激がありました。招聘してくれた15年来の友人、Miwaさんに感謝です。

10月18日（土）、ペンシルバニア大学で開かれたThe Modern Japan History Workshop 2014に参加しました。戸部良一先生の基調講演のあと、瀧井一博先生、将基面貴巳先生とパネルを組み、"The Formation and Evolution of the Bureaucracy in Modern"と、ちょっと広めのテーマで発表させていただきました。ホストの Fred Dickinson先生や、Shaldon Garon先生が丹念にペーパーに目を通し、鋭いコメントをくださり、刺激的でした。ありがとうございます。
ペンシルバニア大のキャンパスは、緑と彫刻が多く、とても洗練されていました。同大の大学院で頑張っている卒業生に会えたこと、深夜に火災警報で起こされてエントランスで1時間過ごしたことなど、思い出深い発表になりました。瀧井先生をはじめ、企画していただいたみなさんに改めて御礼申し上げます。
