Japan-Caricom Young Leaders Invitational Program

In February 2005 the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched an invitational programme for young leaders from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Graduate students and administrative personnel form the University of the West Indies - St. Augustine Campus came to Japan for one week,and I made arrangements for a Keio visit and talk with students and teachers

2005年2月、外務省はカリブ共同体（CARICOM）から若手リーダーを招聘するプログラムを立ち上げました。このプログラムにより、西インド諸島大学(University of West Indies) - セントオーガスティンキャンパスから大学院生やスタッフが一週間の予定で来日しました。このうち一日が慶應大学の学生や教師たちと交流する時間に充てられました。

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is launching The Young Leaders Invitation Program for CARICOM countries in February 2005 with a visiting delegation from the University of the West Indies (UWI) - St Augustine campus in Trinidad and Tobago. Besides people-to-people exchange, one of the purposes of the program is to promote educational collaboration between Japan and the Caribbean region.

2005年2月、外務省はCARICOM（カリブ共同体）若手リーダー招聘プログラムを立ち上げ、トリニダード・トバゴにある西インド諸島大学（UWI） - セントオーガスティンキャンパスから代表団を招きました。日本とカリブ海地域の人々の交流を促すことに加えて、このプログラムは、教育面での相互協力を促進することを目指しています。

After celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations in 2004, the Government of Japan selected Trinidad and Tobago to inaugurate the program. The twin island nation is one of the most developed economies in the CARICOM region and has established relations with the wider academic world. It hosts the Wharton-Harvard Caribbean Conference, where MBA students and faculty from these prestigious universities explore potentialities in the economic, cultural and natural resources of the islands. The planned visit to Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus on February 16^th 2005 continues to expand new links with leading Japanese academic institutions.

プログラムを実施する最初の国として、日本政府が選んだのは、2004年に外交樹立40周年を迎えたトリニダード・トバゴでした。トリニダード・トバゴは２つの島からなる国で、CARICOM地域で最も経済が発展しており、教育面でも国際化を進めているところです。Wharton-Harvardカリブ海地域会議も開催され、これら一流大学でMBAを専攻する学生たちが、この国の持つ経済的、文化的な、そして天然資源における可能性を探求しています。２００５年２月１６日の慶応大学湘南藤沢キャンパスへの訪問は、カリブ共同体の若手リーダーたちと、日本の一流大学との間の新たな関係とその可能性を示すものとなりました。

Interest among young people in the Caribbean is high. These students at the University of the West Indies learn the Japanese language and culture.

カリブ海地域においては、武道だけでなく日本文化一般に対する関心が高まっています。生け花やマンガ・アニメの人気も上昇しています。
