Prior to the last World Cup Soccer in Germany, many Japanese had never heard of Trinidad and Tobago. During the event there were a few television studios in Tokyo interviewed local residents from Trinidad and Tobago. Nevertheless although the general public had very little idea about the twin island nation, there is a strong underground interest in its culture. Kiyoshi Kawashima, importer of TTIL steelpans (Trinidad and Tobago Instruments Limited) and leader of the Panland, is one of the most stalwart supporters. He and his group participate annually at the Keio University SFC Tanabatasai in summer. Also with the help of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation and the Japan Football Federation, I was able to coordinate their entry and presence into the Japan-T and T friendly match in August 2006.
ほとんどの日本人にとってトリニダード・トバゴは、昨年ドイツで行われたサッカーワールドカップまでは、未知の国でした。大会期間中、東京のテレビ番組がトリニダード・トバゴ出身の人たちにインタビューを行いました。2つの島からなるトリニダード・トバゴについて、日本の人々は何も知らなかったわけですが、潜在的にはその文化に対して強い興味を持っている人がいることがわかりました。例えば、スティールパンの輸入に携わっている川島きよしさんは、カリブ海地域文化の熱烈な支持者の一人といえます。川島さんのグループは、慶應大学SFCの七夕祭に毎回参加してくれています。また、トリニダード・トバゴサッカー協会と日本サッカー協会の協力を得て、2006年8月の日本対トリニダード・トバゴの親善試合で演奏してもらうことができました。
