Create a collection
It is not possible to observe and record everything that we encounter during field research. Because the research site may be full of unanticipated events, we are always expected to cope with the situation, on-the-spot, as it unfolds. However, it would be helpful if we organize a set of guidelines, in advance, to pursue the research.
One useful approach, for example, to observe the research is to make a collection. That is to identify a “marker (mark)” in advance, and gather in the field. A “marker” can be an object (e.g., bag, signboard, or shoes), or can be an event (e.g., handshake, lineup, or taking shelter from the rain). It is better to choose a “marker” that is simple and identifiable while you are out in the field.
Go out to the field and take at least 3 pictures:
- First, identify a “marker” (i.e., object/event) to be collected.
- Then, collect your “markers.”
Start a collection by taking three pictures, and if possible, try to carry on within your day-to-day activities. As your collection grows, think about similarities and differences among objects/events collected.
フィールドでは、すべてを観察・記録することはできない。そして、つねに予期せぬ出来事が起こりうる。その時、その場で臨機応変に対応することが求められるが、あらかじめじぶんの振る舞いについて大まかなルール（＝観察や記録のすすめ方）を決めておくとよい。たとえば、フィールドワークをすすめる際、「マーカー（目印）」となる観察対象を設定し、集めてみる。マーカーは、モノ（カバン、標識、靴など）でもいいし、コト（握手、行列、雨やどりなど）でもいい。〈現場〉で、集めるべきマーカーであるかどうかを判断しやすいように、わかりやすいモノ・コトをえらぼう。
フィールドに出かけて、少なくとも３枚の写真を撮る。

まずは３枚の写真を撮ることから始めて、可能であれば、毎日の生活のなかで、マーカーの採集を習慣づける。件数が増えてきたら、対象となったモノ・コトの共通点や相違点について考えてみよう。
