OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHOD
SFC is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding this year. For this class, we have invited a handful of SFC alumni from around Japan and the world, who have especially embodied the SFC spirit in their roles as societal leaders. These select alumni have asked themselves throughout their everyday lives, what the “spirit” of this era is, and they have been continuously updating their way of thinking and doing and their selves based on this question. As they speak to you about their thoughts and experiences, we hope to give you the resources and inspiration to design the core of your own “SFC Spirit”.
As this is a course that would benefit all SFC students, we welcome students of all grade levels. We especially encourage first year students new to SFC to take this class alongside “Policy Management Studies” and “Environment and Information Studies”.
For Fall Semester 2020, we plan on inviting the following alumni as guest lecturers:
Masatada 'SEICHU' Kobayashi (Rakuten, Inc.)
Takako Yamada (Waku Work English)
Kotaro Chiba (Drone Fund)
Acci Baba (Visual Artist)

Sandra Okita (Columbia University)
Takashi Iba (Keio University)

Kotaro Watanabe (Takram)
Teru Sato (BEENEXT Capital Management Pte. Ltd)
Kazuhide Sekiyama (Spiber Inc.)
Most lectures will be conducted in English. However, a few will be interpreted into English, with the lecture originally given by the guest speaker in Japanese.
Classes will be conducted via zoom online. Students are expected to focus, actively engage, and have meaningful interactions among students during each session. Depending on the guest, there may be workshops or group discussions; Students are expected to focus and actively engage in every session.
Students must submit a reflection report after every class of what was learned and thought during the lecture. At the end of the course, students will be asked to create contents introducing SFC spirits, such as video, blog, web page, songs ... etc., and broadcast it on the Internet.

STUDENT SCREENING
Only the selected students can take this course.
Number of students in the class (scheduled) : About 300
Pre-registration screening by submitted an assignment
Self-Introduction Sheet
Submit one-page, engaging summary of yourself to the lecturers in a PDF format.
This assignment is going to be shared with all the lecturers in advance so as to let them know students’ characteristics and promote smoother engagements and communications over zoom calls.
The introduction should entirely cover the following; where you have lived, what you have done, what your interests are and what you are doing/going to study at SFC. Please include what you would like to do and dreams/challenges you may have in the future if any.
Be sure to keep it to ONE PAGE (because it is not too many, but not too few for me to get to know you). Please include your name, grade, and photos of yourself and what represents you. There is no specific requirement/number limitation for photos of you, but ones that explain your personality the most are preferable.
This screening is not asking for a typical resume or wordy application, but something that is designed in a way of your aesthetic. The most important things are to make yours visually attractive, and easy to understand.
And here is good news for you: this year we are hoping to accept more people than usual, as we do not have classes onsite. The screening is not designed to see if your interests and experience match to the contents of class. However, if you don't meet the above content and format requirements (e.g., not writing the content properly, only writing and not including visual elements, submitting too little or too much in terms of volume, submitting in a file other than PDF format, etc.), you may not be accepted.
Also, there is a limit to the amount of file size that can be uploaded, and SFC-SFS gets heavy right before the deadline, so please prepare yours in good time.
We are really looking forward to seeing your unique introductions!
Assignments, Examination and Grade Evaluation
Grading will be based on attendance, class activity, reflection reports, and final assignment.
